An uncomfortable topic

A note on integrity, effort, and why the little things do matter.

Before we dive in, we want to be clear on something. Our blog posts are never written about one or two individuals, or to call people out. If we ever needed to speak directly to an athlete, we’d do that privately and respectfully. This space, our blog, is a tool we use to educate, inform, and support everyone in our community. Some of you have been with us for years, and have read the things we have written many times over. While others are newer and still learning, or have never heard us talk about them. Wherever you’re at, the blog, is here to serve as a reminder in why we do things, what’s happening, etc. It’s not calling people out, it’s explaining the importance of why CrossFit holds certain values. This is not the first time we have written about this topic. In fact, way back in the day, when Scott and Tyson owned the facility, I recall a blog Tyson wrote, and back then one of the ways it was referred to, was as being a “clockwhore” sorry for the language.

So, some “real talk” on one of the more uncomfortable topics in CrossFit.

In CrossFit, we’re often asked to lean into discomfort, to push through fatigue, face movements we struggle with, and be honest about where we are in our journey. That same honesty should show up in how we approach our workouts, our reps, and the whiteboard.

So let’s get into it, and talk about rep shaving.

Rep shaving might be, skipping a few reps, trimming a round, or calling time before the work is finished. Sometimes, it’s just an honest mistake, you lose count, you misread the workout, it does happen. But when rep shaving is intentional, when reps are skipped to be faster on the whiteboard, or keep up with someone in class that’s a different story.

Here’s the truth:
Your coaches notice.
Other athletes in class notice.
And whether you realize it or not, your own fitness notices.

When you shave reps, you’re not winning. You’re doing your fitness a massive disservice. CrossFit is built on consistency, intensity, and accuracy, cutting corners gets in the way of all three. It might feel like “just a few reps,” but over time, those shortcuts add up, and all you’re doing is hindering your own progress.

We don’t train just to post good scores. We train to improve, to get stronger, to move better, and that only happens when we do the work.

So here’s our ask:

Do the reps.
Do them well.
Own your effort.
Leave your ego at the door.

What you actually do in the workout is always more valuable than a made up number. The whiteboard scores don’t matter more than your integrity and your fitness do.
