Finding the Light

Kym Dekeyrel is an adaptive CrossFit athlete who was born with a degenerative eye condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa and completely lost her sight eight years ago.

She became lost within the darkness until the day that her husband brought her to a CrossFit gym. The CrossFit community instantly embraced her for what she could do instead of judging her for what she could not.  When she first began competing in 2019, there was not a vision division and there was little understanding of what it’s like to compete as a person with a visual impairment.  It is through her and her fellow athletes with visual impairments persistence and advocacy that there is now a vision division with appropriate accommodations.

Kym’s first CrossFit competition was the WheelWOD Games when it was part of UG Series, in 2019 and was actually right here in our facility.

October, is blindness awareness month, Kym and her team reached out last year about doing the “Finding the light WOD”, and it was such a cool experience that we’ve decided to make it an annual WOD we do. It is the hope that this workout will continue to bring awareness to the community of those with visual impairments and encourage inclusivity and understanding.

This workout was designed so that athletes are able to close their eyes during the workout and experience what it is like to workout in Kym’s shoes. We will not force anyone to if they do not feel comfortable, however we will encourage you to try at least a couple reps of each movement with your eyes closed.
