Being open to a different perspective
One of the biggest takeaways from the CrossFit Level 2 this past weekend wasn't that we needed to completely change the way we coach. It was that we should never become so comfortable with our own habits that we're unwilling to challenge them.
As coaches, we naturally develop routines over time. We have our favourite cues, our preferred way of warming up a movement, the flow of our whiteboard brief, and the way we transition through class. Those habits aren't a bad thing. In fact, many of them are built through years of experience, countless classes, and learning what works well.
But one of the take aways from last weekend was for sure that we should be open to thinking outside of what has become our norm. To challenge ourselves to explain a movement differently. Try a new cue. Consider a different way of organizing our class. Ask ourself if something we've done the same way for years could be made even better with a small adjustment.
That doesn't mean changing for the sake of change. It means remaining curious enough to keep learning. It means recognizing that there is almost always another perspective worth considering, and never assuming we've got coaching completely figured out.
As coaches, we ask our athletes to do this every day.
We ask you to try movements that feel uncomfortable. We ask you to trust the process, even when something doesn't click right away. We ask you to receive feedback with an open mind because we know that's where improvement happens.
We should expect the very same thing from ourselves.
The same is true for our athletes when it comes to coaching.
If you regularly attend the same class with the same coach, you've probably become accustomed to how they coach. You may know the cues they tend to use. You may know how they structure their classes, and you may even know the way they explain movements.
So when you end up with another coach on the floor. They might use a different cue for a movement. They may approach the whiteboard brief slightly different. They may explain the same movement in a way you've never heard before.
Our encouragement is to be open to it. One mindset we'd encourage everyone to let go of is, "Well, Coach so and so tells me to do it this way."
The reality is that coach you’re use to isn't coaching that class. The coach standing in front of you is.
Every coach at CrossFit Indestri shares the same coaching philosophy, standards, and commitment to helping you move well. At the same time, every coach has their own experiences, personality, and communication style. Sometimes hearing a cue in a different way is exactly what an athlete needs. We've all experienced moments where a movement suddenly makes sense because someone explained it just a little differently.
We'd also ask you to be open to your regular coach changing things up from time to time.
If you notice a slightly different warm up structure, a new cue, or a different way of approaching a movement, it isn't because we're abandoning what we've always done. It's because we're continuing to learn.
That's exactly what a course like the CrossFit Level 2 challenges us to do. It encourages us to examine our own habits and ask whether there's an even better way to help our athletes succeed. It reminds us that growth doesn't come from doing things the way we've always done them simply because they're familiar.
The best coaches are lifelong students. They continue to ask questions, seek feedback, and refine their craft. They remain humble enough to know there's always something new to learn.
We hope our athletes approach training the same way. By staying coachable. Staying curious, and staying open to a different perspective.
Because whether you're an athlete or a coach, that's where growth happens.
