Being true to you

Over the weekend at the CrossFit Affiliate Summit, one of the topics that came up was: being true to yourself in business, or moving the salt shaker back. It really hit home, and after also seeing a post from Coach Jason Ackerman recently, we wanted to share a few thoughts.

While it’s not directly fitness related, it’s relevant to many of you, as a number of our athletes are also small business owners as well, and this might spark some reflection for you, or be something that you need to hear, so we wanted to share.

Running a business isn’t easy. There are a million moving parts, constant decisions to make, and no shortage of people who offer their opinions about what you should be doing. Feedback can be valuable, and listening to feedback is important, but at the end of the day, the way you run your business has to work for you.

One of the big reasons businesses close, especially in the fitness industry, is because owners get caught in the trap of trying to make everyone happy. They bend, adjust, and compromise so much that what once fueled their passion starts to feel draining. Eventually, they’re left stressed, burned out, and unhappy, and they wake up one morning and think, they no longer want to do it anymore.

Here’s the truth: your business is a reflection of your vision, your passion, and your hard work. If you don’t enjoy running it, everything in it will suffer.

So our advice, and what was shared over the weekend by many fellow business owners is simple, yet sometimes very hard to do: stay true to you (move the salt shaker back). Take in feedback, consider the suggestions, but filter everything through the lens of does this align with what I want this business to be? Does this fuel my passion, or is it draining it? If the answer is no, or it’s draining it, it’s okay to say no.

When you run your business in a way that makes you happy, when it reflects your passion and your values, you’re far more likely to stay motivated and inspired. And that energy shows. Your team feels it, and your customers feel it. That passion is contagious.

So to all of you who are business owners out there: don’t lose sight of why you started. Run the business you’re passionate about, and pour everything into it. Because when you do, you’ll not only build something you’re proud of, you’ll build something that lasts, because it’s something that you love doing.
