Play
As adults, many of us (not all, some of us are great at continuing to play) but often many of us, forget how important it is to just play.
As kids, we played all the time. We rode bikes, played tag, climbed trees, built forts, and made up games simply because they were fun. Nobody was counting calories, tracking heart rate zones, or worrying about whether the activity was the most efficient use of their time.
We moved just because we enjoyed it. Then life happened.
Work, mortgages, kids, responsibilities, schedules, and endless to do lists slowly replaced much of the play in our lives. Exercise became another task to check off the list. Something we knew we should do rather than something we genuinely looked forward to.
One of the things we love most about CrossFit is that it has a way of bringing some of that play back into fitness.
Now, before anyone gets too excited, we're not suggesting European Handball is replacing Fran anytime soon. But every now and then, we like to throw a little fun into the mix.
Today's workout was a perfect example. Our focus work today is Tic Tac Toe, but CrossFit style, of course.
It it still fitness? Absolutely.
You will be running, working hard, carrying an object and breathing heavy.
But you’ll also be laughing and smiling while doing it. And that's important. Not just for you, but for your coaches too.
Some of our favourite things are the days when the facility is filled with laughter.
Results matter.
Coaching matters.
Progress matters.
But enjoying the process matters too.
Fitness shouldn't feel like punishment.
It should be challenging, and it should push you.
It should help you become stronger, healthier, and more capable.
But it should also be something you look forward to.
So while we know games aren't for everyone, don't be surprised if every now and then we sneak a little play into your workout. Because sometimes the best way to get people moving is to remind them that fitness can be fun.
And sometimes adults need to skip the heavy back squats and to just play, too.
