Protecting a Culture
One of the best things about CrossFit is that people genuinely fall in love with it.
For many athletes, it's much more than exercise. It's the hour of the day where you get to shut off the noise from work, family responsibilities, deadlines, and the countless other stresses that life throws at you. It's where you can focus on yourself for a little while. It's where you can challenge yourself, laugh with friends, move your bodies, and leave feeling better than when you arrived.
For many, the gym becomes an outlet. A stress relief, and a truly happy place.
And honestly, we completely understand that feeling because we feel the same way. It’s one of the reasons why we took over as owners of CrossFit Indestri.
We love it too.
We love training, coaching, helping people discover what they're capable of. We love watching confidence grow, and seeing athletes accomplish things they never thought possible. We love the friendships, the community, and the sense of belonging that develops here.
CrossFit Indestri has become like a second home for many of us, and we understand why.
Though there is one thing that can sometimes get forgotten.
While CrossFit Indestri may be your escape from work, it is also our workplace.
While you're coming in to take a break from the stresses of your day, we're either at the start, in the middle, or at the end of ours.
That's not a complaint. Not at all. It's simply reality.
Every class has to be coached. Programming has to be written. Equipment has to be maintained. The facility has to be cleaned. Memberships have to be managed. Questions have to be answered. Retail has to be ordered. Coaches have to communicate. Problems have to be solved.
Like any business, there are responsibilities happening behind the scenes every single day that most will never see.
In order for things to run smoothly, we have policies, expectations, and etiquette within the facility. Not because we're trying to make things difficult, or be controlling. And not because we don't want people enjoying themselves here. But because a facility with no structure quickly becomes a facility that nobody enjoys being part of.
Imagine if classes started whenever people felt like starting. Or if athletes ignored the whiteboard brief, and coaches couldn't get a word in because conversations were happening over top of them. Imagine if equipment was left out after every workout, and if nobody respected class times, shared spaces, or the people around them.
It wouldn't take long before the experience started to suffer, and the very thing people love about CrossFit would begin to disappear.
One of the reasons CrossFit works so well is because there is structure. There is coaching, standards, and a respect for the class, the coach, and the community. Those things create the environment that people enjoy being part of.
In many ways, the expectations, and etiquette aren't there to make the experience less enjoyable. They're there to protect what makes it enjoyable in the first place.
When athletes arrive on time, coaches can properly brief the workout. When people listen during instruction, everyone gets the information they need. When equipment is put away, the facility stays safe and organized. When people respect one another, the community remains welcoming and supportive. The result is an hour that runs smoothly and allows everyone to focus on why they came in the first place: to train, to learn, to challenge themselves, and to have fun.
Another part of being a great community member is understanding that every class has a beginning and an end.
We absolutely love that people enjoy spending time here. In fact, one of the greatest compliments we can receive as affiliate owners is that people genuinely want to be here. We know that for many athletes, the gym is one of the best parts of your day. But just as classes have a start time, they also have an end time.
When the workout is finished, the equipment is put away, and the coach wraps things up with an "awesome work everyone, you're good to go," that's generally the signal that class has come to an end.
What often isn't seen are the tasks that happen between classes and after the final class of the day. Equipment needs to be cleaned and maintained. Programming that may need to be reviewed. Sometimes we have meetings. Schedules may need to be adjusted. Questions that need to be answered. The facility being reset for the next class. etc. And at the end of the day, we need to close up the facility, tidy up from the day, lock the doors, and head home to our families.
The downtime between classes often isn't actually downtime. It's often when much of the work that keeps the affiliate running gets done.
We love the conversations, the friendships, and the connections that are built here. They are part of what makes this place so special. But we also ask that people remember that while the gym may be where you come to escape your workday, this is our workday.
The reality is that protecting a culture isn't always fun. And if we're being totally honest, there are days when it's one of the hardest parts of the job.
Nobody opens a CrossFit affiliate because they dream of reminding people to listen during the whiteboard brief, put equipment away, respect class times, or be mindful of how their actions affect the experience of others.
We don't enjoy having those conversations.
We don't enjoy being seen as the buzzkill, the rule enforcer, or the "fun police."
And the honest truth is, sometimes it feels pretty awful.
Sometimes a coach asks for attention during a briefing and gets eye rolls. Sometimes a boundary is put in place and in turn people get frustrated with us. Sometimes we're simply trying to do what's best for the facility as a whole and it isn't received the way we hoped. Those moments aren't enjoyable for us.
But after nearly 16 years, we've learned something important.
Great communities don't maintain themselves, and great cultures don't survive on good intentions alone. They survive because somebody is willing to protect them.
It's also worth saying something that probably doesn't get said often enough.
We're actually really fun people, with really big hearts.
We know that may sound strange in a blog post about rules and expectations, but it's true.
Our favourite days at the gym are the days when we're laughing right alongside all of you. We create board game workouts because we love seeing how much fun people have during them. We organize events, challenges, trackNITEs, theme workouts, fundraisers, and community gatherings, because bringing people together is one of our favourite parts of what we do.
We love the fun side of CrossFit.
We love the relationships.
We love the stories.
We love watching people become friends.
The facility that so many of you have grown to love didn't happen by accident.
For more than 11 of CrossFit Indestri's 16 years, we've been the people behind the scenes helping shape and nurture what it CrossFit Indestri is. And we've been part of its culture and community for more than 14 of its 16 years.
We've celebrated victories with you.
We've mourned losses with you.
We've watched children grow up inside these walls.
We've seen friendships form, marriages happen, families expand, and lives change.
This place means a lot to us because so much of who we are is woven into it.
That's why we care so much.
The standards aren't separate from the culture. They're part of the reason the culture exists, and we don't protect CrossFit Indestri just because it's a business. We protect it because we love it.
We’ve seen facilities where structure slowly disappeared. Places where expectations became unclear, etiquette faded, and eventually the experience suffered. Not because people were bad, but because nobody was willing to step in and protect what made the place special. The irony is that the things that can sometimes feel restrictive are often the very things that create the environment people love being part of.
The coaching.
The organization.
The respect.
The structure.
The sense that everyone is pulling in the same direction.
Those things don't happen by accident. They happen because coaches, owners and members all understand they matter.
So if that means we're the guardians of the ethos of CrossFit Indestri, then that's a responsibility we're willing to accept.
Not because we enjoy enforcing rules, and absolutely not because we want to control. But because we care deeply about this place and the experience people have when they walk through the doors.
Our goal has never been to be the fun police. Our goal is to make sure CrossFit Indestri remains the kind of place people love walking into. Not just today, and not just next year. But in another 16 years from now too.
We're incredibly grateful that so many people choose to spend part of your day with us. And that’s something we never take that for granted.
We simply ask that you remember that while coming here may be your favourite hour of the day, it is also our life's work. And if protecting the culture, the coaching, the standards, and the community is what it takes for CrossFit Indestri to still be here another 16 years from now, then that's exactly what we'll continue to do. Because we truly feel that this place is worth protecting.
