Finding a 1 RM
We don’t test 1 rep maxes often., but when we do, we want you to treat it for what it is, a test.
It’s not a “heavy for today,” it’s not a “comfortable single,” and it’s definitely not something you should be able to repeat for multiple reps. This is your opportunity to see just how far your strength has come.
Finding a 1 rep max means pushing yourself to your limit. It might mean failing, and that’s okay. In fact, it’s expected. Failure in these moments isn’t a bad thing, it’s information. Failing a 1RM tells you exactly where the edge of your capacity is right now, and knowing that helps in your training.
Finding a 1RM isn’t about building strength today, it’s about testing it. The goal is to discover the heaviest load you can move once. Just once. That weight should feel uncomfortable. It should demand focus, grit, and a little bit of fire.
To be clear: this is not the same weight you’d choose for a workout. You don’t hit your 1 rep max clean during Grace. Your 1RM is a standalone number, reserved for days like today, days where we’re asking you to show up, dial in, and go for it.
So when a 1 rep max day shows up on the whiteboard, lean into it. Take your time building up, listen to your coach, and when it’s time to go, go. Miss the lift, okay, give yourself 3 attempts at that weight. Dial in, and go after it.
Have fun, lift heavy, these days don’t come around often.
