We're in hay season at CrossFit Indestri
Steph and I recently came across a social media post from another gym whose owners were previously dairy farmers. They were talking about hay season on the farm, the long days, the late nights, the demanding schedule and the constant rinse and repeat that comes with getting the work done. The gym they own was going through a busy time, and they referred to it as the same hay season from their years farming.
They explained that while hay season can be incredibly taxing, it's also a necessary part of their livelihood. It's a busy season, but it's just that. A season. It won't last forever.
Let’s start by saying this blog is not a complaint. Not at all. It’s simply an honest conversation/explanation.
Because as we read the post, we couldn't help but think about CrossFit Indestri. Because we're in our own version of hay season, and starting this week, things are ramping up even more.
Our team training schedule is expanding, and we'll now be training teams on some Mondays, every Tuesday, every Wednesday and some Thursdays, all after our 6pm CrossFit class.
That means some longer days multiple times a week. Between our regular CrossFit classes, youth programs and evening team training, there are going to be plenty of days when we're spending even more time coaching. And while we absolutely love what we do, we're also human. Sometimes long days are long days, no matter how much you love your job.
But there's a reason we do it.
We love working with young athletes. We love helping them develop strength, speed, coordination and confidence. We love watching them discover what they're capable of, and we love the opportunity to teach them lessons that extend well beyond their sport. (And for many years during the 2020 time period we couldn’t do it.)
We're teaching the teams about effort, attitude, accountability, being coachable and being a great teammate. And we're incredibly fortunate to have local teams and organizations that trust us with their athletes.
But there's another side to team training that might be important for our athletes to understand.
It's also an additional source of income for our business. And that additional income is one of the reasons we've been able to keep our CrossFit membership rates where they are, as one of the lowest, if not the lowest, coach led membership in the area. In fact in 2024, after 14 years in business, we had our very first membership price increase. EVER.
We know that other memberships elsewhere are in the $200 to $300 range, and we've worked incredibly hard to keep ours affordable, while continuing to offer the quality of coaching and programming that we believe our athletes deserve.
You'll also notice that the majority of our regular class schedule is coached by owners. That's another way we manage our operating costs and keep our membership rates on the lower side. None of that happens by accident. It happens because we're willing to put in the work, take on additional opportunities and make decisions that support the long term health of our business.
And sometimes, that means we have a hay season.
What this means for our 6pm class
With team training now happening multiple evenings a week, we're going to need a little extra help from our evening athletes in ensuring a smooth transition between classes.
Our team training sessions take place after the 6pm class, which means we need to transition the facility from one group of athletes to the next.
Once the class has finished, we're asking that you put your equipment away, gather your belongings and make your way.
We know that friendships are a huge part of what makes our community special. We love that you enjoy spending time together, catching up and having conversations after class. We simply don't have the extra time or space for athletes to hang around the facility while we're preparing for the next group.
Our coaches need to reset equipment, prepare the facility and be ready to give those athletes the same attention and quality of coaching that you've just received.
It's not about rushing you through your workout or making you feel unwelcome. It's about respecting the schedule, the coaches time and the athletes who are coming in. Right now the 6am class is the only class that experiences this turn over regularly with the 7am class coming in behind them. So we really appreciate your help with this.
It's only a season
There are going to be some long days ahead. Later evenings and plenty of days when it feels like we've barely left the gym before we're walking back through the doors.
But we're also incredibly grateful to be in a position where we have these opportunities.
We've spent years building relationships with local teams, coaches, athletes and families. We've spent years building a facility that people trust. And we're proud of what we've built.
We also recognize that a busy season can be both exciting and exhausting. Those two things can exist at the same time. Loving what you do doesn't mean it isn't demanding, and being grateful for the opportunities doesn't mean the extra hours don't take their toll.
But just like hay season on a farm, there's a purpose behind the work.
This additional training allows us to continue doing what we love, provide opportunities for young athletes in our community and support the business that allows us to keep showing up for our athletes every single day.
So, if you notice that we're spending a few more evenings at the gym, moving a little quicker between classes or asking for a little extra cooperation as we transition between groups, you know why.
We're in our version of Hay Season.
It's going to be busy. It's going to be demanding. And there are probably going to be a few evenings when we're more than ready to go home, be with our families and put our feet up.
But it's a season, and it's one we're grateful to have.
Again, we’re sharing this is not to complain about it at all. It’s just to be open and honest with you. We’re sure many of you can relate to some version of a hay season in your own lives as well, and maybe reading this, will help you if you feel a little bit overwhelmed in a busy ‘hay season’ of your own.
