Forging Better Humans: Beyond the workout

Yesterday, we talked about what Forging Better Humans means. About helping you become stronger, faster, fitter and more capable, and how sometimes that means pushing you a little harder, while other times it means knowing when to pull you back.

But there's another side to forging better humans that has very little to do with how much weight you can lift, how fast you can run or how many rounds you can complete.

It's about the kind of person you become along the way.

One of the things we love most about CrossFit is that while everyone walks through our doors with their own goals, their own abilities and their own reasons for training, we're all doing it together. And that gives us an opportunity to become better at something that goes well beyond fitness: being good humans to one another.

Be someone else's biggest fan

There's something pretty special about being in a room full of people who genuinely want to see each other succeed. When someone gets their first pull up, hits a new PR or finally accomplishes something they've been working toward for months, the excitement isn't limited to the person who did it. The whole facility celebrates.

And sometimes the moments worth celebrating aren't nearly as obvious. Maybe someone is back after an injury. Maybe they're having a tough week but showed up anyway. Maybe they're working on a movement that's been frustrating them for months, and today they made a little progress.

You don't have to know someone's entire story to be part of their success. Sometimes a high five, a little encouragement or simply acknowledging their effort can make a bigger difference than you realize.

We want our athletes to be each other's biggest fans and cheerleaders. We want you to celebrate each other's accomplishments, encourage one another through the difficult moments and genuinely want the person beside you to succeed.

But there's an important distinction between supporting someone and coaching them.

You don't need to tell someone what weight to put on their bar, how to correct their movement or whether they should be scaling a workout. That's what we're here for. Our coaches are responsible for teaching, correcting, modifying and making sure each athlete is getting what they need from their training.

Your role as a fellow athlete is even simpler. Be a fan. Cheer them on. Celebrate their wins. Be the person who makes someone else excited to walk through the doors.

And the best part is knowing that someone else's success doesn't take anything away from yours. There is more than enough room in this facility for everyone to get better.

The integrity you build

Then there's integrity. And we think this is one of the most valuable things CrossFit can help develop.

Every workout gives you an opportunity to practice it. When you're counting your own reps, recording your own score and holding yourself to the movement standards, you're making little decisions that ultimately come down to being honest with yourself.

Nobody is standing over you counting every single rep. Nobody is watching every movement you make. And nobody is going to know if you accidentally did nine reps instead of ten, unless you tell them. But you know. And that's what matters.

Integrity isn't about being perfect. We’ve all lost count, made mistakes and occasionally have to stop and figure out whether we're on round three or round four. It happens. It's about what you choose to do when you realize you've made a mistake, and whether you're willing to hold yourself accountable even when nobody else would know the difference.

There is something incredibly satisfying about finishing a workout and knowing you earned every single rep. Whether you finished first, last or somewhere in between, the work is yours.

And those little decisions add up. Being honest about your score, taking responsibility for your mistakes and doing what you said you were going to do are habits that don't need to stay inside the gym.

They're the same qualities that make us better teammates, friends, coworkers, parents and people.

The kind of strong that matters everywhere

We love watching our members get stronger. We love the PRs, the first pull ups, the faster benchmark times and all the things that make the work we do inside the gym so rewarding.

But maybe even more, we love watching people become more confident, more encouraging and more willing to celebrate the accomplishments of others. We love watching friendships develop between people who might never have crossed paths outside of CrossFit Indestri. And we love seeing people take pride in doing things properly, even when nobody else is paying attention.

Because at the end of the day, we don't just want you to leave here with stronger legs, better endurance or a heavier clean and jerk.

We want you to leave here with a little more confidence in yourself, a little more appreciation for the people around you and the kind of integrity that carries into everything else you do.

Be strong.
Be honest.
Be coachable.
Be someone else's biggest fan.

That's another part of what we mean when we say we're forging better humans.
