Only in a CrossFit Affiliate
Spend enough time at a CrossFit affiliate and you completely lose perspective on just how weird some of the things we do actually are.
Inside CrossFit Indestri? Totally normal.
Pretty much anywhere else? There would be questions.
Lying flat on the floor after exercising.
Not sitting down. Not casually catching your breath. Fully horizontal, staring at the ceiling, reconsidering the decisions that brought you here. And somehow the person beside you doing exactly the same thing makes it completely normal.
Talking about your snatch in public.
“How’s your snatch feeling?”
“I haven’t snatched in a while.”
“My snatch actually felt really good today.”
Perfectly acceptable CrossFit conversation. Maybe know your audience outside the gym.
Getting excited about new workout shoes.
To most people, they’re just shoes. To us? Are they good for lifting? Can you run in them? Rope climbs? How wide is the toe box? Can I squat in them? We have opinions.
Having a favourite pull up bar.
They are all pull up bars. Except they absolutely are not. And if someone is standing under yours when class starts, you’re going to pretend it doesn’t matter while secretly wondering why they chose that one.
Being genuinely excited about lifting five more pounds than you did six months ago.
It’s five pounds. And it can absolutely make your entire day.
Owning an unreasonable amount of workout gear.
Grips. Knee sleeves. Wrist wraps. Weightlifting shoes. Running shoes. Skipping rope. Tape. Chalk. Belts. Remember when you thought all you needed to work out was a pair of running shoes? That was cute.
Having a completely normal conversation while someone beside you is rolling around on the floor with a lacrosse ball under their butt.
Nobody even acknowledges it.
Knowing exactly how much every barbell weighs.
35 lb. 45 lb. 15 lb. Training bar.
We can calculate percentages, plate combinations and exactly what needs to go on the bar surprisingly quickly. Ask us to do regular math and results may vary.
Discussing how sore your butt is with multiple people before 7:00am.
No explanation required.
Everyone already knows.
Yesterday was Pistols.
Using the phrase “just bodyweight” as though moving your entire body repeatedly is somehow the easy option.
“Oh good, no barbell.” Famous last words.
Voluntarily coming back to something that absolutely destroyed you the last time.
“Fran is programmed.”
Normal people: I would simply not go.
CrossFitters: I wonder if I can beat my time?
Looking at tomorrow’s WOD before bed and allowing it to affect your emotional state.
Thrusters? Great. Now nobody’s sleeping.
Cheering for someone who finishes last.
This might be the weirdest one of all outside of CrossFit. The clock is running. Most people have finished. One person is still working. And that person gets the loudest cheers and the most excitement. Because in here we all know exactly what it took to finish that workout. We all suffered together, and we’re proud of the work that went into it, and what it took to finish.
And that might be one of our favourite weird things about CrossFit.
After a while, none of this feels unusual anymore.
It’s just what we do.
Disclaimer: Remember, how this post started. We’re not saying this is weird stuff to do, we’re saying, it’s all normal for us, it’s weird outside of a CrossFit Affiliate.
