Listen like it’s your first class

When you’ve been doing CrossFit for a while, much of the gym starts to feel familiar. You recognize the movements, know where the equipment is and may have completed a similar workout many times before.

That familiarity is valuable, but it can also make it easy to assume you already know what’s coming.

The workout may include movements you’ve done hundreds of times. The intended stimulus, movement standards, loading and pacing may all feel familiar too. But your coach may have a slightly different focus for you today.

That’s why everyone needs to listen during the whiteboard brief and movement instruction, regardless of experience. Avoid gathering equipment or having side conversations while the coach is speaking. You may already understand the movement, but someone beside you may be learning it for the first time, and they deserve the opportunity to hear the coach without distraction.

Listening also gives the coach an opportunity to do more than explain what’s written on the board. They’re helping you understand how the workout should feel, where it may become challenging and what choices will give you the best training outcome that day.

Even if you believe you know what the coach is going to say, listen anyway. There may be a different progression, a new cue or one small detail that changes how you move. Good athletes don’t outgrow instruction, they remain open to it.

Experience shouldn’t make us less attentive. It should help us recognize just how valuable coaching is.

Listen to the briefs like it’s your first class, there is always something more to learn.
