JY Pi

JY refers to Jen Young. Jen was a CrossFitter in Burlington, ON at CrossFit Altitude. A special person, who truly loved the CrossFit community with all her heart. She would geek out on analytic numbers, she was the analytics person in CrossFit before all these other people like Brian Friend, etc. popped up, she loved cats, and wrote WODPress for Sweat RX Magazine. After she was diagnosed with cervical cancer Jen created a foundation called Love the Snatch, which included a Masters Competition that carried on for years after her death.

On Sunday, May 17th, 2015 Jen lost her battle with cervical cancer at the age of 31. For some of us, we were lucky enough to know JY and to even call her our friend. Jen’s passing came the weekend before the 2015 East Regionals. Her passing hit the Canada East CrossFit community hard. She was a bright light, she was a true weekend warrior CrossFitter, and competed in many local competitions. A hashtag was created after Jen’s passing #JenisCanadaEast, the first event that year at the 2015 East Regional was Randy, a snatch event, to honour Jen all the Canadian women competing wore Love the Snatch shirts. It was a pretty powerful moment to watch these ladies walk on the floor on honouring Jen. Whether they knew her personally or not, they were taking time to honour and celebrate her. Because as CrossFitters, that’s what we do, we pay tribute to our own. Sometimes it’s just a workout, other times, it’s so much more.

Since Jen’s passing we have done her JY Pi workout every year, including two years virtually on zoom. Jen made the trip to CrossFit Indestri just a month before she passed to pick up boxes of all our old event T-Shirts for UG Series. Jen use to sell them as a mystery shirt through her foundation Love the Snatch. It’s hard to believe that this year will mark the 10th year since her passing. While most of our current members won’t know who Jen was, it’s important to us to continue honouring her, and to introduce knew CrossFitters to who she was. Honouring someone through a workout is what CrossFitters do best.

As most of you who have done this workout know, while we’re explaining this workout, I tend to remind you of this. JY was not the heaviest lifter, or the fastest athlete in the box, but she was technical, she took pride in moving well. This workout looks like. a lot on paper, but when you get into it, the reps are low volume, do not do this workout for speed, do this workout for quality, forget the clock, and move well. Move beyond the standard, do Jen Young proud. She loved the CrossFit community, and while you might not have known her, please do this workout to honour her and make her proud.
