Fitness is built on very ordinary days
We love the big days. The PRs, all the firsts (pull ups, MU’s, etc.), the heavier lift, the benchmark time you’ve been chasing, or the workout where everything just clicks. Those are the days we remember and the ones that tend to get celebrated.
But they’re not really where your fitness is built.
Your fitness is built on a random Tuesday when there’s nothing particularly exciting happening. It’s built on the day you’re tired but come anyway. The day you use the same weight you used last time because it’s still the right weight for you. The day you scale a movement, struggle through something you’re working on, or finish somewhere in the middle of the room without a PR to show for it.
Fitness is built through hundreds of very ordinary hours spent moving your body, listening to your coach, practicing movements and doing the work.
We tend to give a lot of attention to the moments when progress becomes visible, but that PR didn’t happen because of what you did that day. It happened because of everything you did before it. All the squats, presses, runs and pull up progressions. All the warm ups and drills. All the days you walked through the door without knowing whether it was going to be a great training day and trained anyway.
That’s the part of fitness that isn’t particularly exciting. There’s no shortcut around it, and you’re probably not going to make an Instagram post celebrating every time you show up and do exactly what you were supposed to do.
But those days matter.
You don’t need every workout to be extraordinary. You don’t need to leave with a PR, and you certainly don’t need to crush yourself every time you train. You need to keep showing up, moving well, putting in the work and stacking ordinary days on top of ordinary days.
Then every once in a while, one of those big days comes along. You lift something you couldn’t lift before. You get a first (pull up, MU, T2B, etc). You run faster. Something that used to feel heavy suddenly won’t, and it can feel like the progress happened all at once.
It didn’t. It was happening all along, quietly, on all those ordinary days.
That’s how fitness is built.
