National coaches week

It’s National Coaches Week. And yes, we could use this opportunity to tell you that we have the best coaches around. But let’s be fair. Every facility is going to tell you they have the best coaches around. What facility is going to say otherwise?

But “The best” is an opinion. While we absolutely believe we have an incredible coaching team at CrossFit Indestri, there is something we can say with confidence, and not opinion.

When it comes to coaching functional fitness and the CrossFit training methodology, we have the most experienced coaching team in our area. Hands down. No question.

And that experience matters.

Because coaching fitness is one of those professions that, in our opinion, still isn’t as respected or as understood as it should be. There can be an assumption that because someone has taken a lot of classes, trained for a long time or is a good athlete themselves, they can coach.

But training and coaching are two very different things.

Coaching isn’t setting the clock, turning up the music, explaining the workout and yelling out words of encouragement for the hour.

Coaching is affecting change in another human being.

It’s seeing movement. Really seeing it. It’s noticing the foot that collapses, the knee that tracks incorrectly, the back that changes position, or the bar path that is just slightly off. And then having the knowledge and experience to understand why it is happening, how important it is and how to communicate a correction that actually makes sense to that particular athlete.

But it’s not just seeing. It’s seeing and correcting. It’s understanding the intended stimulus of a workout and making sure the people in your class can achieve it. That means knowing when to scale a load, or movement. And being able to explain it, so the athletes understand the stimulus they’re trying to reach.

Twenty people can walk into the same class and see the exact same workout written on the board. A good coach understands that those twenty people may need twenty slightly different versions of it to achieve the same intended stimulus. That takes knowledge, and experience, and it also takes attention.

But there’s another piece of coaching that is harder to teach.

You have to genuinely care about the people walking into your class.

You learn how they move. You learn their strengths and weaknesses. You know their injuries and limitations. You notice when something looks different. You know when they need encouragement, when they need a correction and when they need you to challenge them.

You care about what happens to them beyond today's score on the leaderboard.
Because the goal isn't simply to get someone through a workout. The goal is to make them better.

To help them become stronger, fitter and more capable. To improve the way they move. To build confidence in what their body can do. And ultimately, to positively affect their quality of life.

That is coaching. And it’s a craft, one that is developed over years and thousands upon thousands of hours. Our coaches have spent those years learning the CrossFit methodology, coaching, continuing their education, refining their eye and learning from one another.

Different ages.
Different abilities.
Different bodies.
Different goals.
Different injuries.
Different personalities.

Experience teaches you things that taking a course or being a good athlete cannot.

So while we’ll happily tell you during National Coaches Week that we think our coaches are some of the best around, what we're most proud of is the backing of;

Experience. Knowledge. Education. Standards. And coaches who genuinely care about the people they coach. They’re the best.

When you walk into CrossFit Indestri, you aren't just coming in to do a workout.
You're coming in to be coached.

There is a very big difference. And to our CrossFit Indestri coaches, thank you for understanding that difference and for showing it every single day.

Happy National Coaches Week CFI team.
