Things CrossFit has made weirdly normal
Spend enough time doing CrossFit and eventually you lose perspective on what is actually normal.
There are things we do, say and genuinely get excited about that would make absolutely no sense to someone who has never stepped inside a CrossFit affiliate.
Like discussing your hands with other adults. Calluses, rips, tape, grips, how bad the bar feels today. At some point, inspecting the palm of someone else’s hand and offering an opinion on it became a perfectly normal conversation.
We also know an unusual amount about what other people can lift. You may not know what someone does for work, but you know their back squat. You know they hit a 135lb clean last month, and you have a pretty good idea they’re ready for 145lbs.
Then there’s chalk. On our hands, on our clothes, on the floor and somehow on our faces. We use it to lift a barbell, hang from a rig, climb a rope and, occasionally, just because everyone else is chalking up and it feels like the right thing to do.
We voluntarily carry heavy things for absolutely no reason other than someone told us to carry them over there and then bring them back. Sandbags, dumbbells, kettlebells, plates, sleds. Sometimes we even pay money to enter competitions where we get to carry even heavier things.
We have multiple pairs of shoes for exercising.
Running shoes.
Lifting shoes.
CrossFit shoes.
Shoes that are good for rope climbs.
Shoes we refuse to rope climb in because we like them too much.
We celebrate things like getting upside down, jumping onto something, pulling ourselves over a bar or finally being able to squat properly. Things we did without thinking when we were kids suddenly become major accomplishments as adults, and somehow a room full of people gets genuinely excited about it.
We casually use sentences like, “How’s your snatch?” and nobody reacts.
We look at a workout containing running, burpees and thrusters and say, “Oh, that looks fun.” And sometimes we even mean it.
We willingly set alarms to register for a workout that we already know is going to be hard. Then we show up, complain about it, do it anyway and talk about how great it was afterward.
We lie on the floor when we’re finished. Not because anything is wrong. That’s just where we live for a few minutes now.
We take pictures of whiteboards. We know what AMRAP, EMOM, T2B, HSPU and RFT mean. We understand that “Fran” is not necessarily a woman, but she’s gonna hurt.
And maybe the weirdest and best thing CrossFit has made normal is genuinely caring how the person beside you is doing. You notice when they haven’t been there. You know when they’ve been chasing a PR. You cheer when they finally get a movement they’ve been working on, and you stick around when they’re the last person finishing.
From the outside, a lot of what we do probably looks a little strange.
From inside here? Completely normal.
