The whiteboard brief matters

One of the most important parts of class happens before the workout even starts.

The whiteboard brief.

It is not filler time. It is not the part to talk over, stretch through, finish your own warm up, load your barbell, gather your equipment, or have side conversations.

It matters, and it deserves your attention.

As coaches, the whiteboard brief is where we set the class up for success. It is where we explain the intent of the workout, discuss the stimulus, explain movement standards, scaling options, pacing strategy, loading, transitions, and any movement substitutions that may need to happen.

It is where we begin coaching.

CrossFit has always been coach led. The coach’s job is not simply to put a workout on the board, start the music and press start on the clock.

The coach teaches, guides, see’s the movement, and corrects.
The coach protects the experience, and helps athletes understand not just what they are doing, but why they are doing it, and that starts at the brief.

Giving the coach your undivided attention is not about rules or control.
It is about respect.

Respect for the coach.
Respect for other athletes.
Respect for the process.

Because when side conversations pull attention away, or when someone is moving around to gather equipment. Coaches get distracted, and athletes miss information. Questions get repeated. Instructions have to be given multiple times, and the flow of class breaks down.

One athlete talking or gathering equipment, becomes ten athletes missing something important. And often, the people talking or gathering equipment are not the only ones affected. The athlete beside them misses the scaling option they needed. Someone else misses the movement standard. Another athlete misses the strategy piece that would have changed their whole workout. And the coach gets distracted, and might miss something important they wanted to address.

The brief is where everyone starts on the same page. This is where we ask athletes to be present in class. To put the phone down, pause the conversation, face the coach, to listen, engage, and to be in it.

Our coaches know what they're doing, and they really care about helping you get the most out of your workout, and be the best you can be. The brief is for the betterment of every athlete in the facility.

Give the coach your full attention during the briefing please.
