CrossFit
Recently, a social media post was shared with me. It was a post from a fitness facility comparing their approach to CrossFit. In doing so, they were implying that our style of training is a race against the clock, built on sloppy reps.
I could have seen it and moved on. Honestly, that’s what we usually do. We know what we do, and we know why we do it. This is something that comes up from time to time, and it’s worth taking a moment to clarify. Because what we do inside a properly run CrossFit affiliate looks very different than that perception.
So let’s take a closer look at that. Yes, we use a clock. But the clock isn’t there to encourage chaos or careless movement. It’s there to provide structure, intensity, and a measurable stimulus. The goal is never to move poorly just to finish faster. The goal is to have you move well, and then over time, move well under intensity. There’s a difference. A big difference. And inside a properly run affiliate, you see that.
If you’ve spent any time in our classes, you know this. You know that it’s always, mechanics (moving well), then consistency (moving well consistently), and then intensity (adding speed, or load while keeping the other two sound.)
We correct movement.
We scale movements.
We adjust loads.
Because movement standards don’t disappear when the clock starts. If anything, they matter even more. Intensity without mechanics is not what CrossFit is built on. It’s always been: Mechanics → Consistency → Intensity in that order.
So let’s also address the constantly varied aspect for a second, as this tends to be one of the most misunderstood parts of CrossFit. When we say “constantly varied,” we don’t mean random workouts thrown together without thought. We mean intentional variation. Different time domains. Different loading patterns.
Different movement combinations. All designed to create adaptation. Because when the body is exposed to varied, well structured stimulus, it adapts. And that adaptation leads to a stronger, fitter, more capable humans.
One truth that no one can deny is that 20+ years ago, CrossFit flipped the script on how people train. Introducing: functional, measurable, repeatable, constantly varied, elite fitness for the everyday athlete. And it brought people together. It made training more engaging, bringing a community aspect into it, and giving people a reason to keep showing up, day after day, week after week, year after year. And that shift challenged a lot of what people thought fitness should look like. When something is widely effective and widely visible, it’s often easy to misunderstand or oversimplify. Sometimes that comes from a lack of understanding of the methodology. Other times, it’s based on clips online, secondhand opinions, or a snapshot taken out of context.
Inside CrossFit Indestri, it is never about racing the clock or chasing reps for the sake of it. It’s about learning to move well, building consistency, and then applying intensity appropriately.
It’s about coaching.
It’s about movement standards.
It’s about progressing over time.
The clock is just one tool we use. What matters is how you move, how you improve, and how you show up. At the end of the day, we don’t compare ourselves to anyone else.
We believe in what we do because we see it work every single day.
Stronger bodies.
More confident people.
A community that shows up for each other.
We’re simply building a stronger Collingwood one WOD at a time.
We have always stood behind what we do, and always will.
