Earned not owed
It is human nature to want more.
To want to be better.
To move faster.
To lift heavier.
To finally get that skill you’ve been chasing.
In CrossFit, that drive shows up everywhere.
One more rep.
A heavier barbell.
A faster time.
A higher level of movement.
And there is nothing wrong with that. That desire to improve is what pushes us to train consistently. It’s what gets us back in the gym when progress feels slow. It’s what drives growth, not just physically, but mentally.
Wanting more is how we get better. But there is an important truth that often gets overlooked. Wanting something is not the same as earning it.
Progress in training does not come from wishing, hoping, or believing you deserve something. It comes from effort. Real, consistent, sometimes uncomfortable effort.
If you want a heavier lift, you have to put in the time under the bar.
If you want a higher level skill, you have to put in the time working on it, even when it feels frustrating.
If you want a faster time, you have to be willing to push a little harder when it gets hard.
There are no shortcuts, nothing is given. And your fitness does not owe you anything. Every bit of progress is earned through the time you show up, the reps you complete, and the effort you put in.
One of the most common traps in training is the word “should.”
“I should have that lift by now.”
“I should be able to do that movement.”
“I should be further ahead.”
”My time should have been faster.”
But fitness doesn’t work that way. There is no timeline that you are owed. No guarantee that effort alone will instantly produce results. Everyone progresses at different rates, with different challenges, and different starting points. When we start thinking we “should” have something, it usually isn’t coming from reality. It’s coming from ego, and ego has no place in our growth.
There is a reason one of the oldest slogans in CrossFit is to leave your ego at the door. Because ego whispers that you deserve results without the full process. Growth requires the opposite mindset. It requires humility.
Being okay with where you are does not mean settling. It does not mean giving up on improvement. It means recognizing the work you have already put in. It means understanding that progress is built slowly, rep by rep, day by day. It means respecting the stage you are in right now while continuing to work toward what comes next. Every athlete in the facility is somewhere on that journey.
Some are chasing their first pull up.
Some are chasing a new personal best.
Some are simply working to move well and stay healthy.
All of it matters.
All of it is earned.
In the end, fitness is not about what you think you should have. It is about what you are willing to work for.
It is about showing up when motivation is low.
It is about putting in effort.
It is about choosing progress over ego, every single day.
Because nothing meaningful in training is given.
It is earned, and that is exactly what makes it so valuable.
