Virtuosity isn’t perfection, but it should always be the goal. - Wednesday, August 12th, 2026

Virtuosity isn’t perfection, but it should always be the goal.

If you’ve been around CrossFit for any length of time, you’ve probably heard the word virtuosity. CrossFit defines virtuosity as “performing the common, uncommonly well.”

Virtuosity isn’t perfection. No one moves perfectly all the time. Not beginners, experienced CrossFitters, not even coaches or Games athletes. But while perfection isn’t the expectation, virtuosity should always be the pursuit.

Before adding more weight, chasing a faster time, aiming for more reps or trying to keep up with the athlete beside you, the goal should always be to move well first.

Just because you can add more weight doesn’t mean you should.
Just because you can move faster doesn’t mean that’s what you need today.
And just because you can technically RX a workout doesn’t mean it’s the right choice if your movement quality disappears in the process.

CrossFit has always taught Mechanics → Consistency → Intensity. In that order. It doesn’t say mechanics until they’re perfect. Perfection isn’t the requirement, but sound mechanics and the continual pursuit of better movement absolutely matter.

We love that CrossFit is measurable. We love PRs, heavy barbells, fast times and watching athletes accomplish things they’ve worked incredibly hard for. But sometimes the clock and the leaderboard can get louder than they should. A faster time with significantly worse movement isn’t progress. Neither is more weight at the expense of sound mechanics.

Sometimes virtuosity actually requires restraint. Take five pounds off the bar. Break your gymnastics reps before your positions disappear. Slow down enough to regain control. Listen when your coach tells you that today isn’t the day to add another plate.

That isn’t taking the easy way out. It’s understanding that how you get there matters.

Whether you’ve been doing CrossFit for six weeks or sixteen years, your coaches are still going to coach you. None of us truly ever graduate from the basics, because there will always be an opportunity to move a little better.

So while virtuosity isn’t perfection. It is the relentless pursuit of doing ordinary movements extraordinarily well.

Move well.
Move well consistently.
Then add intensity.

And no matter how fit you become, never stop chasing virtuosity.
