If CrossFit movements had personalities
Have you ever thought about what CrossFit movements would be like if they were actual people? Because after spending enough years around them, we're pretty convinced they all have their own personalities.
And some of them would be a whole lot easier to get along with than others.
Burpees: That annoying friend who just keeps showing up, whether you invited them or not. Nobody is ever particularly excited to see them, but somehow they're always included in the plans.
Deadlifts: The dependable friend. Strong, straightforward, and generally pretty easy to get along with. Until they get a little too heavy, and suddenly the relationship becomes complicated.
Double Unders: The unpredictable friend. One day everything is going beautifully. You're getting along, you're in sync, life is good. The next day? Absolutely nothing works, and you have no idea what you did wrong.
Thrusters: The friend who thinks everything needs to be harder than it actually is. Why do one thing when you could combine two things and make everyone miserable?
Wall Balls: The friend who seems harmless at first. Friendly, approachable, nothing too intimidating. But spend enough time together and you'll start questioning your life choices.
Box Jumps: The friend who requires your complete attention. Look away for one second, lose focus, and things can go sideways pretty quickly.
Pull Ups: The popular friend. Everyone wants to hang out with them, everyone wants to be good at them, and some people make the relationship look ridiculously easy.
Overhead Squats: The high maintenance friend. Everything has to be just right. Your shoulders, your hips, your ankles, your balance. One little thing is off and they're not having it.
Rowing: The friend who gives back exactly what you put in. Treat them nicely and they'll treat you nicely. Get a little aggressive and they'll happily remind you who's in charge.
Assault Bike: The friend who has absolutely no interest in your feelings. No sympathy, no encouragement, no mercy. Just suffering.
Handstand Walks: The show off friend. A little flashy, a little dramatic, and somehow manages to make everyone stop and watch.
Running: The friend who's always suggesting you go outside. Doesn't care if it's hot, cold, raining, or snowing. Just wants to get out the door and go.
Snatches: The perfectionist. Timing matters. Technique matters. Everything matters. And just when you think you've figured them out, they'll remind you that you haven't.
Toes to Bar: The friend who starts off fun but gets progressively more difficult to deal with the longer you're together.
Walking Lunges: The friend who seems perfectly reasonable until the next morning, when you realize just how much they've affected your life.
The funny thing about CrossFit is that we all have different relationships with these movements. One person's favourite is another person's absolute nightmare. Some movements come naturally, others take years of practice, and a few seem determined to keep us humble forever.
But that's part of what makes CrossFit fun. There's always something to work on, something to improve, and something that will make you laugh at yourself along the way.
