Sometimes the only thing in your way, is you

Last week we wrote a blog about cherry picking, after very few athletes attended the 2.1 km bridge run with a med ball class. We talked about avoiding workouts that make you uncomfortable or that target your weaknesses.

We want to take that a step further.

Sometimes, when we’re frustrated with a lack of progress or feeling stuck in our training, we look outward. We question the programming, the time of day we train, whether we're eating the right things, etc. And sure, those factors absolutely matter. But often, the biggest thing holding us back is a lot closer to home:

It’s ourselves.

More specifically, our mindset, our habits, and the way we talk ourselves out of doing the hard stuff.

Maybe you skip workouts that don’t look “fun.”
Maybe you avoid heavy lifting days because you don’t feel strong.
Maybe you coast through met cons instead of pushing your pace.

We all do it. And we’re not saying to never do it. What we’re saying is that over time, those small choices compound, and they absolutely start to look a lot like stalled progress.

Progress requires discomfort.
It requires showing up when you don’t feel like it.
It means choosing discipline over convenience, and effort over ease.

Getting out of your own way might look like:

  • Showing up for the long run, even when you hate running.

  • Attempting the lift you’ve been avoiding.

  • Scaling with purpose instead of ego.

  • Focusing on movement quality instead of chasing the leaderboard.

The beautiful part. The more often you choose the hard thing, the easier it gets to trust yourself to do it again.

So if you’re not where you want to be right now, take a breath. Reflect, and ask yourself honestly, am I standing in my own way?

If so, then step aside. Show up. Do the work.

You might be surprised by what happens next.
