Nancy will turn 90 years old this summer. And this year, she’s registered for the CrossFit Open for the third time.
Let that land for a second.
Not watching.
Not cheering from the sidelines.
Not “maybe next year.”
She’s in it.
The CrossFit Open often gets thought about and talked about in terms of leaderboards, scores, and percentages. But stories like Nancy’s are what truly define it.
While the Open is the start of the CrossFit Games season, and the first step in the road to the CrossFit Games for the elite athletes, the open is really about showcasing that CrossFit is for anyone, for any age, any level of fitness, anyone who is willing to work. It isn’t about how much weight you lift or how fast you move. It’s about participation. It’s about showing up, doing the workout that’s in front of you, and giving the best effort you can on that day, with the community inside your affiliate.
At almost 90, Nancy does exactly that.
Her workouts will be under the foundations division. Her pace will be her own. Her standards in the foundation division will be appropriate for her ability. And her commitment is unquestionable.
When someone who is nearly 90 is willing to raise their hand and say “I’m in,” it reframes every excuse the rest of us tell ourselves.
Too busy.
Too nervous.
Not strong enough.
Not ready.
The CrossFit Open, much like CrossFit is for anyone.
Yes you have to earn each rep, but that’s okay, that’s what we do daily.
The CrossFit Open is not just for the fittest.
It’s not just for competitors.
It’s not just for people chasing numbers.
It’s for all of us who believe that training is a lifelong practice. All of us who understand that effort doesn’t expire, and who show up, year after year, because movement is a gift.
Nancy turning 90 and doing the Open for the third year isn’t inspiring because it’s rare.
It’s inspiring because it’s possible.
The CrossFit Open truly is for anyone.
