Did You Watch the CrossFit Games?
What a weekend in CrossFit. That was hands down the closest, most nail-biting CrossFit Games we’ve seen since 2017.
This year wasn’t packed with flashy new skills or wild new equipment. It was classic CrossFit, raw, gritty, and simple in the best way. The kind of programming that tested work capacity, heart, and execution under pressure.
A lot of the old guard has stepped away. Many of the names that shaped the sport over the last decade have retired or moved on, though there are many familiar faces still out there. Watching this new generation step up, while reflecting on 13+ years of Games history, was something special.
One of my favourite moments always comes after the final event, when Nicole Carroll is handed the mic during the closing ceremonies to present the Spirit of the Games award.
Honestly, I thought it might go to Fee this year. In past years, Nicole’s talked about how the award is for an athlete who embodies the heart of CrossFit, someone always in the background cheering, supporting, and elevating others. Fee was that person all weekend long, and not just for the other athletes, she was uplifting young athletes in the stands all weekend as well.
But this time, Nicole took it back to the roots. She talked about how the Spirit of the Games was born organically. How it started at The Ranch, in the dirt, with athletes who showed up, dropped their bags on the sidelines, and were just excited to test their fitness with whatever was thrown at them. No spotlight, just grit.
So when the award went to Colten, a pig farmer who trains hard, competes harder, and puts his head down and gets to work, it made perfect sense. No drama, no flash, just heart, hustle, and a deep love for what we do. For me personally, as cool as it is to see who will be crowned the fittest on earth, the whole weekend, I’m always secretly watching to see who Nicole will crown the spirit of what we do.
From the CrossFit Games + The Dave Castro’s Instagram pages: (From Nicole’s speech)
“He carries himself with an attitude of humble hard working resilience. Not expecting the world around him to bend to what will make him most comfortable or most recognizable, rather he shows up to answer the call.” — Nicole Carroll, CrossFit Chief Brand Officer. @colten_mertens is your 2025 Spirit of the Games recipient.
CrossFit was made to make us better for life. For the adversities or adventures it throws at us. It enables us to build our capacity for answering the call, for getting it done. Mertens embodies these values with his resilience, attitude, and work ethic.
In a world addicted to comfort, Colten reminds us that comfort is not the goal. The goal is to answer the call. To forge the ability to meet with Triumph and Disaster and treat those two impostors just the same. The technical term for this character trait is Resilience. CrossFit has another word for it: Unfuckwithable.
This year reminded us what CrossFit was built on, and in that, it might’ve been one of the best Games I’ve witnessed since back in the Carson days. It also reminded us that we as CrossFit community are unfuckwithable.
