Attitude, Effort, and Presence

Last month, we starting talking to our youth programs and team training athletes about something that matters just as much as the movements themselves. Yes, they’re learning to squat, press, row, run, and lift with confidence, but the bigger lesson we’ve been focused on is this:

There are three things you can always control in training, your attitude, your effort, and your presence.

It’s been great to watch the kids take this to heart. When they show up coachable, willing to learn, ready to work, and fully present in their sessions, everything changes. They get more out of the hour. They support each other more. They grow in ways far beyond fitness.

And the truth is, these same principles matter just as much in our adult classes.

1. Your attitude sets the tone

Not every day feels like a win. Some days the bar feels heavy, or the workout feels like a grind. But showing up with a willingness to do your best, listen to your coach, and stay positive makes all the difference.

Your attitude affects not only your own experience, but it also affects the person standing next to you. A whole class can shift based on the energy of the group.

2. Your effort is always yours to give

Effort isn’t about going the fastest or lifting the heaviest. Effort is about choosing to work with intention.

Effort means:

  • Moving with purpose

  • Listening to cues

  • Taking correction

  • Scaling appropriately

  • Staying focused on the stimulus

We all need a reminder sometimes.

3. Your presence matters

Being present means showing up ready to train, mentally and physically. It means being engaged during the coach’s brief, participating in warm up, respecting flow, and contributing to the atmosphere of the room.

Presence also means noticing the people around you:

  • Encouraging someone when they need it

  • Celebrating someone’s lift

  • Being a positive part of the class environment

Just like in our youth classes, your presence makes a real difference to those training with you.

While these lessons start young, they belong to all of us.

Watching our youth athletes begin to internalize these values has been one of the best parts of coaching them. They’re getting it, that their mindset and their behaviour matter just as much as their physical effort. And the more we’ve been talking about it with them, the more we realize how important it is in our adult community too.

CrossFit is built on shared effort.
Shared struggle.
Shared wins.

You impact the experience of everyone around you simply by the way you show up.

So as we move towards the end of 2025, a busy month full of benchmarks, holiday energy, and big workouts, take a moment to check in:

How’s my attitude today?
How’s my effort?
Am I present?

If we all show up with those three things dialed in, the entire room feels it.

And that’s what makes this community so special.
