Ethos
There are moments in the facility that remind us exactly why we do this.
Not because of the workout.
Not because of the weights.
But because of the community.
On Friday morning, as the 9:30am class was wrapping up, one athlete was still out on her final 400m run. The rest of the class had finished. Instead laying on the floor to recover, or have conversations among themselves, they heading out to meet up with her outside.
They were there to support her.
They ran with her.
They brought her back into the gym.
They surrounded her on the floor as she picked up the bar for her final overhead squats.
Clapping and cheering loudly.
Not for the fastest time, or for the heaviest weight, but for the effort and the finish.
It was one of those moments where you don’t have to explain what CrossFit is. You just watch it.
She was overwhelmed with the support. You could see it. She had to stop for a second, take a breath, hold it together. Then she stepped back in and finished the workout, strong. To be very honest, I’m not sure there were many dry eyes in the facility at this moment. It was a pretty powerful moment.
At the same time, we had someone coming in to wait for their last Fundamentals session. She had arrived just before the class ended and watched the whole thing unfold. Afterward, she came over and asked, “What did that person do to have the whole gym cheering like that?” The answer was simple. “This is what happens here.”
Athletes support each other.
We show up for each other.
And yes, it also happened to be her birthday.
But that’s not why the gym got so loud, or supported her like that.
The loudest cheers in this place are always for the athlete who finishes last. Because someone pushing through discomfort, doubt, fatigue, all of it, to finish the workout is something we all recognize and understand.
And because the bonds built through the shared suffering in workouts are a big part of the ethos.
It’s not forced, nor is it not something you can write on a wall and expect people to follow.
It’s built over time.
It’s engrained in the type of people who CrossFit.
Through shared effort.
Through hard days and small wins.
Through choosing to stay, to watch, to clap, and to care.
While we see it all the time, Friday was a reminder of that. When an athlete is brought to tears, as they’re trying to finish a workout, because of the overwhelming support, and in turn so are we. That serves as powerful reminder. CrossFit Indestri isn’t just a place to train. It’s a place where people show up for each other in a way that’s hard to explain until you see it for yourself.
