A note on busy classes

Over the past week, we’ve had a number of conversations about the 9:30am class filling up quickly, often right when registration opens right at 8pm. We completely understand how frustrating this can feel.

First, the good part.

Being busy is a good thing. Having a lot of people who want to show up, train, and work on their health and fitness is something we’re proud of, and we don’t take for granted. We love to see your commitment. It’s also the sign of a strong community. With that said, we know it can feel frustrating for you if you try to get into a class and it says full within minutes. It’s also stressful on our end, because we know how important consistency and scheduling are for everyone.

As we’ve mentioned before, we do watch class attendance closely. As I was writing this blog, I went back into Zen Planner and looked at the data. Between December 1st and January 1st, the 9:30am class actually only reached full capacity twice. Those dates were December 15th and December 23rd. Two times.

What we’re seeing as a pattern is;

When registration opens at 8:00pm, many people sign in immediately to secure a spot, but as the evening goes on, plans change, schedules shift, and things come up. When that happens, people sign out, which opens up spots for others to register. On our end, we can’t do anything more than we’re doing about class registration for the 9:30am class filling up quickly, this is you guys signing in right at 8pm..

What we can ask is,

  • If possible, sign in when your sure you will attend

  • If you do sign in and then realize you can’t make it, please sign yourself out as soon as you know so that someone else can sign in

We understand life happens, and things come up, that’s why we allow sign out right up until class time. And why we always suggest you keep checking back, because a space almost alway opens up.

A few other things at play right now, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday are trending busier. That’s not unusual.

It’s also:

  • The start of a new year

  • A time when many people are recommitting to consistency

  • A winter where skiing conditions have been hit or miss

  • 3x a week memberships tend to do Monday, Wednesday, Friday

All of these factors influence attendance patterns.

We will continue to watch the 9:30am class closely. If we need to make some changes, we are prepared to. But with that said, we do encourage you not to be afraid to try another class time once in a while.

There is typically space right now in:

  • 6:00am

  • 7:00am

  • 6:00pm

And while noon has been busy this past week, and reached capacity a few times, it usually has availability as well. Or for those who tend to stick to Monday, Wednesday, Friday, we encourage trying to change it up to and come on Tuesday or Thursday once in a while as well.

One of the old school CrossFit sayings is that routine is the enemy. Consistency matters, yes, but creating a routine that can’t bend at all, can make things harder when life inevitably disrupts it.

Being flexible once in a while:

  • Lets you train when plans change

  • Gives you exposure to different coaches

  • Puts you in class where you will meet different athletes

All are good things. We’re not saying change it up completely, just maybe once in awhile. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding. We’ll keep monitoring attendance and make some adjustments if needed.

Last week was the first full week of the new year, so it’s not completely surprising that classes were busy. And while it can feel a bit frustrating, it that really is a good thing.

We’re grateful for a community that continues to show up, and wants to show up, and put in the work.
