Move Mountains
It’s an honour and a pleasure to introduce new athletes to what Move Mountains is, and who Jenny LaBaw is, each year. It’s a cause and a tradition we hold close to our hearts at CrossFit Indestri.
Back in September 2015, two time CrossFit Games athlete Jenny LaBaw set out on a 500 mile run across the state of Colorado to raise awareness and funds for epilepsy. Though Jenny resides in California, she grew up in Colorado, and every year she and her partner, Marcus, return to spend time in the mountains she calls home.
On one of those long drives back to California, after watching a documentary on Terry Fox, Jenny decided she wanted to make a difference for those living with epilepsy, just as Terry had for those facing cancer. Her goal: to run 500 miles across her home state.
Diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of eight, Jenny has lived with it every day since. Doctors placed countless limitations on what she’d be able to do, but she’s spent her life defying those expectations.
First time meeting Jenny at the 2013 CrossFit Games.
I first met Jenny in 2013 at the CrossFit Games, after chatting online for a few months. Earlier that year, she’d been in a biking accident that left her in a boot and sidelined her from competing in the 2013 season. That connection turned into a friendship that has lasted ever since.
When we created the Women Strong event through UG Series, Jenny was the first elite athlete to jump on board. Through that event, we were lucky enough to welcome her to CrossFit Indestri twice, first in 2014 and again in 2016.
How CrossFit Indestri Got Involved
When Jenny first mentioned her idea for the 500 mile run in the summer of 2015, both UG Series and CrossFit Indestri immediately wanted to help. UG Series sponsored the run, and our members joined in from home, logging daily runs before and after classes to collectively cover 500 miles alongside Jenny while raising money and awareness.
The following year, on the one year anniversary of her run, we joined dozens of affiliates across North America to complete the official Move Mountains workout, designed by Jenny herself. Coincidentally, it was also the eve of our second Women Strong retreat, which meant some of the sport’s top women, Katie Hogan, Becca Voigt, Sam Briggs, and Nicole Holcomb, joined our 6:30 p.m. class to take on the WOD with our members. Jenny arrived at Indestri the next day for the retreat weekend.

Since then, Move Mountains has become an annual tradition for us. Every October 19th, (or as close to it as we can) our community comes together to complete the workout, much like we do Grace for Grace on March 26th, to raise awareness and show support for those living with epilepsy.
Jenny LaBaw is a phenomenal woman: kind, humble, genuine, and unbelievably strong. She’s also one of the most capable athletes in our sport, she can bust out pistols faster than most of us can air squats.
This Thursday, please register for class, wear purple, and join us in support of Jenny and everyone living with epilepsy.
Treat Move Mountains like a hero WOD. Hold your movement standards high. When it starts to feel hard, dig in. Jenny’s 500 mile run wasn’t easy, she broke down many days, but she kept going. She’s lived with epilepsy since she was eight, and she was still one of the top female athletes in CrossFit. Doing hard things is second nature to her.
So when the workout gets tough, tap into something hard you’ve faced. Keep pushing.
Every detail of this WOD means something, 1 mile, 26 reps, because 1 in 26 people are diagnosed with epilepsy.
Let’s keep moving mountains together.
