Move Mountains this Saturday

This Saturday, October 17th, we're swapping out our typical Saturday partner WOD for a workout that holds a very special place in our hearts at CrossFit Indestri.
Move Mountains.

Every year, it's an honour and a pleasure to introduce new athletes to the story behind Move Mountains and to the incredible woman who inspired it, Jenny LaBaw. For those of you who have been with us for years, you know this is a tradition we've continued for a long time, and one that means a great deal to us.

For those who are newer to CFI, here's a little history.

The Story Behind Move Mountains

In September 2015, two time CrossFit Games athlete Jenny LaBaw set out to run 500 miles across her home state of Colorado to raise awareness and money for epilepsy.

Jenny was diagnosed with epilepsy at just 8 years old. Growing up, doctors placed limitations on what she would be able to do. But Jenny has spent much of her life proving that a diagnosis doesn't have to define what someone is capable of achieving.

Inspired in part by the story of Canadian icon Terry Fox, Jenny decided she wanted to do something meaningful for others living with epilepsy. And so, Move Mountains was born.

500 miles. Across Colorado. To make a difference.

It was an incredible undertaking, both physically and emotionally. And while Jenny is an exceptionally talented athlete, those 500 miles were anything but easy.

I know because I spoke with her often throughout that run. There were difficult days, emotional days, and days when she broke down. But she kept going.

Our Connection to Jenny

I first connected with Jenny in 2013, shortly before the CrossFit Open. She had been involved in a bike accident on her way home from the gym, leaving her in a boot and ultimately costing her a return trip to the CrossFit Games that year. After chatting online for a few months, we finally met in person that summer at the CrossFit Games.

What started as a connection through CrossFit became a friendship that I continue to treasure.

Jenny is genuinely one of the kindest, most humble and most wonderful humans you'll ever meet. She's also an absolute badass athlete who can knock out pistols faster than most of us can do air squats.

When I first came up with the idea for the Women Strong event through UG Series, Jenny was the first elite athlete to jump on board. Through those events, we were fortunate enough to welcome her to CrossFit Indestri in both 2014 and 2016.

When Jenny first told me about her idea for Move Mountains in the summer of 2015, we knew we wanted to be involved.

Through UG Series, we sponsored her run, and here at CrossFit Indestri, our members got involved by running before and after classes, raising money and collectively logging miles alongside Jenny until we reached 500 miles ourselves.

It was pretty special to be a small part of something so meaningful. I even reached out to the Terry Fox Foundation, about Terry inspiring Jenny’s run, and was lucky enough to receive a response from his sister that I was able to send to Jenny during her run.

A Tradition That Continues

In October 2016, on the first anniversary of Jenny completing her run, CrossFit affiliates came together to complete a workout Jenny had designed called Move Mountains.

We were one of them.

As luck would have it, we were also preparing to host our second Women Strong retreat, which meant we had some pretty incredible women in the sport of CrossFit joining our members for the workout. Katie Hogan, Nicole Holcomb, Becca Voigt and Sam Briggs all jumped into our 6:30pm class to take on Move Mountains alongside our community.

Jenny arrived the following day for the retreat.

It's one of those memories from our years at CFI that will always stick with me.

Since then, Move Mountains has remained an annual tradition at CrossFit Indestri. Much like Grace for Grace every March 26th, it's a workout we continue to program because the meaning behind it matters.

This Saturday, We Move Mountains

Move Mountains isn't just another workout on the calendar.

It's an opportunity to raise awareness for epilepsy, to recognize those living with it, and to remind ourselves that we are capable of doing difficult things.

The workout includes a 1 mile run and sets of 26 repetitions, representing the statistic that 1 in 26 people in the United States will develop epilepsy during their lifetime.

We encourage everyone to wear purple on Saturday in support of epilepsy awareness.

And when you come into class, we ask that you approach this workout the same way you would a Hero or Tribute WOD.

Respect the movements.
Hold the standards.
Put in the effort.

When it gets uncomfortable, don't immediately look for the easy way out. Find a reason to keep moving.

We all have something difficult we've faced in life. Something that challenged us, tested us or made us question what we were capable of. Draw on that when the workout gets hard.

Because the whole idea behind Move Mountains is that the things we think are impossible often aren't.

Jenny has lived with epilepsy since she was 8 years old. She's competed among the best female CrossFit athletes in the world, run 500 miles across Colorado in 30 days, and continued to challenge the limitations that were once placed on her.

But what makes Jenny so special isn't just what she's accomplished as an athlete. It's the kind of person she is, and her willingness to use what she's been through to help others.

That's why we continue to do Move Mountains.

Not because it's another hard workout. We have plenty of those.

But because there's a story, a person and a purpose behind it.

So this Saturday, if you’re coming to class, wear your purple, show up ready to work and be part of a tradition that has meant so much to our community for more than a decade.

Together we’ll Move Mountains.
