JY Pi

JY refers to Jen Young.

Jen was a CrossFitter out of CrossFit Altitude in Burlington. She was one of those people who just got what CrossFit was about, and she loved the community deeply. She was the kind of person who would geek out over analytics before that was even a thing in our space. Long before names like Brian Friend became known, Jen Young was already doing that work. She also wrote for WODPress, Sweat RX Magazine, loved her cats, math (hence Pi, it was her favourite number) and poured herself into everything she did.

After being diagnosed with cervical cancer, Jen created the Love the Snatch Foundation, which went on to host a Masters competition that continued for years after her passing.

On Sunday, May 17th, 2015, Jen lost her battle at just 31 years old.

For those of us who knew her, and were lucky enough to consider her a friend, her passing was hard to believe. It came the weekend before the 2015 East Regionals, and you could feel it across the entire Canada East CrossFit community.

That year, the first event at Regionals was Randy, a snatch workout. All of the Canadian women walked out onto the floor wearing Love the Snatch shirts. Whether they knew Jen personally or not, they showed up to honour her. #JenisCanadaEast. It was one of those moments you don’t forget. Because that’s what CrossFitters do. We take care of our own. Sometimes it’s just a workout, other times, it means a lot more.

Since her passing, we’ve done the JY Pi workout every year. Even through the years we were on Zoom, we didn’t miss it.

A month before she passed, Jen came to CrossFit Indestri to pick up boxes of old UG Series shirts. She sold them as mystery shirts through her foundation, to raise money for cervical cancer, that’s the kind of person she was.

This year marks 11 years. Most of our current members won’t know who Jen was. That’s exactly why we keep doing this. To remember her, to introduce her to a new generation of CrossFitters, and to honour her.

As we brief this workout, there’s something I always remind you of, Jen Young was not the strongest in the room, nor was she the fastest. But she was sure to alway move well. She cared about how she moved, she took pride in it. So to honour Jen, move well.

Don’t do this for the time.
Do it for quality.

Forget the clock.
Move well.
Don’t move to standard, move beyond the standard.

Do it in a way that would make Jen proud.

Because she loved this community with everything she had.
And today, whether you knew her or not, this is a chance to honour a fellow member of the Canada East CrossFit community.

Skip ahead to 4:12:20 and you can watch the heats of ladies for yourself.
