Train for the Unknown and Unknowable
One of the original CrossFit slogans that is still used today is this:
"Train for the unknown and unknowable."
The idea is simple. Life doesn't tell you what's coming next. It doesn't give you a workout briefing, a warm up, or a chance to prepare for every challenge before it arrives. The goal of CrossFit has never been to prepare you for one specific event. The goal is to prepare you for whatever comes your way.
In many ways, that's exactly what brought most of us through the doors in the first place.
For many people, joining CrossFit was a step into the unknown.
You didn't know the movements.
You didn't know the terminology.
You didn't know the people.
You weren't sure if you would fit in, if you would be able to do the workouts, or if you even belonged here.
It was uncomfortable.
And then something happened.
You kept showing up.
You learned the movements.
You gained confidence.
You met people.
Friendships formed.
The gym started to feel familiar, and eventually, it felt like home.
That's one of the best things about being part of a community.
But sometimes comfort has a way of quietly creeping back in.
Over time, many of us develop routines. We attend the same class times every day. We stand in the same spot. We gravitate toward the same group of people. We know who will be there, where we'll set up, and what to expect when we walk through the door.
Without realizing it, we've traded the unknown for the familiar.
There's nothing wrong with routines. In fact, routines are often what help us stay consistent. But every once in a while, it's worth asking ourselves whether we've become a little too comfortable.
Have we stopped challenging ourselves in ways that have nothing to do with the workout?
Part of the beauty of CrossFit is that it asks us to adapt. Not just physically, but mentally as well. It teaches us to be flexible, resilient, and capable of handling situations that aren't exactly what we expected.
Sometimes that can be as simple as attending a different class time.
Sometimes it's introducing yourself to someone you've never trained beside before.
Sometimes it's setting up in a different part of the gym.
Sometimes it's showing up without knowing who else will be there.
These may seem like small things, but stepping outside of familiar patterns reminds us that growth often lives just beyond our comfort zone.
The good news is that you're not walking into the unknown alone.
The friendships you've built here are important. The relationships you've formed matter.
We love seeing those connections develop because they're a huge part of what makes this community special. But it's also worth remembering that your community extends beyond the handful of people you see most often.
The person in the early morning class is part of your community.
The person in the evening class is part of your community.
The member you've never spoken to before is part of your community.
We're all on the same team. We're all working toward a similar goal, and we're all rooting for one another.
So every once in a while, challenge yourself.
Change the routine.
Try a different class.
Stand somewhere new.
Train beside someone different.
Lean back into a little bit of the unknown.
Because one of the greatest gifts CrossFit offers isn't just physical fitness.
It's the confidence that comes from knowing you can handle things when they're unfamiliar. And that's a skill that extends far beyond the walls of the gym.
