This Saturday: Hero WOD Gale Force

This Saturday we'll be taking on Hero WOD Gale Force, a workout that honours the life and legacy of Devyn Gale.

If you would like to complete the workout as prescribed, please bring your own backpack filled with books.

That detail isn't random. It's one of the things that makes this workout so meaningful.

While pursuing her nursing degree, Devyn would often train by hiking with a backpack loaded with her textbooks. She was preparing herself physically for the demanding work of fighting wildfires while also working toward a career helping others through healthcare. That backpack became a symbol of both her strength and her commitment to serving others.

On July 13, 2023, Devyn, a 19 year old member of the British Columbia Wildfire Service, tragically lost her life while battling a wildfire near Revelstoke, British Columbia. She was struck by a falling tree during efforts to contain the fire.

She left behind her parents, Graham and Philomena, her brother Nolan, and her sister Kayln, along with countless friends, teammates, and fellow firefighters whose lives she touched.

Devyn was a fellow CrossFitter, from Mountain Made CrossFit. That affiliate first came together shortly after her passing to ask other CrossFit affiliates around the world to honour Devyn's memory by doing this workout. In 2024, CrossFit officially recognized it as one of its Hero WODs, ensuring her story and sacrifice will continue to be remembered.

The Workout

30 Minute AMRAP

  • 20 Box Step-Ups (24"/20") wearing a weighted backpack (50/35 lb)

  • 23 Burpees Over Backpack

  • 19 Air Squats

When the 30 minutes are over, the workout isn't finished.

The most meaningful part happens after the clock stops.

We'll gather together as one community and form a circle. On the coach's call, we'll perform one final set of 19 air squats together, each squat representing one year of Devyn's life.

There won't be a race.
There won't be a score to beat.

There will simply be a community moving together in remembrance of someone who gave everything in service to others.

Hero WODs have never been about comparing scores. They're about remembering names, learning stories, and recognizing that behind every workout is a person whose life mattered.

This Saturday, we hope you'll take a few minutes before class to learn Devyn's story, bring your backpack full of books if you'd like to complete the workout as prescribed, and join us in honouring a remarkable young Canadian whose courage, dedication, and selflessness continue to inspire people around the world.
