What Constantly Varied actually means
One of the defining characteristics of CrossFit is that it's constantly varied.
It's also one of the most misunderstood.
Many people think "constantly varied" means doing something completely different every day simply to keep things interesting. “Random” if you will. While variety certainly keeps training engaging, that's not the reason it's part of the CrossFit methodology.
Constant variation has a purpose, and it’s not random.
Our goal isn't to become really good at one thing. Our goal is to become capable across many things. Life doesn't ask us to perform the same task every day.
One day you might have to carry heavy groceries. Another day you might spend hours hiking. You might help a friend move, shovel snow, pick up your grandchild, climb a ladder, sprint after your dog, or simply need the energy to play with your kids after work.
Life is constantly varied. Your training should prepare you for that.
In our programming, you’ll squat, deadlift, press, row, run, skip, climb, jump, carry, throw, pull, push, and move your body in countless different ways. Some days the WOD is longer. While some it’s short and fast. Some focus on strength, others challenge your endurance, skill, coordination, balance, or accuracy.
That doesn't mean we make workouts random. In fact, it's the exact opposite. Every day, every week, and every month of programming is thoughtfully planned. We look at movement patterns, loading, volume, recovery, energy systems, and skill development to ensure athletes are progressing over time.
Sometimes you'll notice movements repeating. That's intentional. Variation doesn't mean never repeating a workout or movement. If you only did something once, you'd never improve at it. We revisit movements and benchmark workouts because they allow us to measure progress, refine technique, and celebrate growth.
Think of it like learning a language. You don't memorize a word once and move on forever. You use it repeatedly, in different conversations and different situations, until it becomes second nature.
Fitness works the same way.
The variation comes from combining familiar movements in new ways, changing the stimulus, adjusting the loading, or challenging a different energy system. Your body continues adapting because the demands continue changing.
That's where real fitness is built.
Greg Glassman, CrossFit's founder, described fitness as increased work capacity across broad time and modal domains. In simple terms, that means becoming capable of doing more work across a wide variety of tasks, over short, medium, and long durations.
That's exactly what constantly varied training develops.
It's why someone who consistently trains CrossFit often finds everyday life becoming easier. Carrying luggage feels lighter. Hiking feels easier. Helping a neighbour move isn't intimidating. Playing with your kids doesn't leave you exhausted.
You're not just training for today's workout. You're training for whatever tomorrow asks of you.
That's what "constantly varied" really means.
