What Is CrossFit?

It seems like a pretty simple question. What is CrossFit?

If you’ve been doing CrossFit for any length of time, you’ve probably heard the definition: constantly varied, functional movements, executed at high intensity. But understanding CrossFit goes a whole lot deeper than being able to repeat that sentence.

CrossFit is a training methodology designed to develop broad, general and inclusive fitness. The goal isn't to make you the strongest person in the room. It also isn't to turn you into a marathon runner, an Olympic weightlifter, a gymnast, a sprinter or a powerlifter. It's to make you capable across a really wide range of physical demands.

CrossFit defines fitness across ten general physical skills: cardiovascular and respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy. We aren't trying to maximize one of those at the expense of everything else. We're trying to develop all of them.

That means we want you to be able to lift something heavy, but we also want you to be able to run. We want you to jump, pull, push, carry, as well as be able sprint and to go long distances. We want you to move your own body well, learn new physical skills and be able to walk into something you haven't specifically prepared for and be able to handle it well.

And that is where understanding CrossFit becomes important.

If you look at CrossFit one workout at a time, there will almost always be something "missing." Today might not have anything heavy. Tomorrow might not have any traditional cardio. You might go a while without running long, lifting to a max or seeing your favourite gymnastics movement.

You're not supposed to get everything every day.

Constantly varied also doesn't mean random. Over time, we're exposing the body to different movements, loads, distances, time domains, rep schemes and combinations. Sometimes we go short and fast.
Sometimes we go long.
Sometimes we lift heavy.
Sometimes we move light loads for a lot of reps.
Sometimes we move our own body through space.
Sometimes we move external objects.

Every one of those exposures is a piece of a much bigger picture.

That's why an eight minute workout isn't "not enough" simply because it's only eight minutes. A day without a barbell isn't a wasted opportunity to get stronger. A week without a long run doesn't mean endurance has been forgotten. You can't judge the effectiveness of the methodology by looking at a single workout in isolation.

One workout isn't CrossFit. One week isn't CrossFit.

CrossFit is what happens when you consistently expose yourself to all of these different demands over months and years. Your body adapts. Your capacity grows. Things that once felt heavy don't feel as heavy. Distances that once felt long don't feel as long. Movements that once seemed impossible become possible, and when something completely different gets thrown at you, you have a pretty substantial toolbox to pull from.

This is also where the idea of preparing for the unknown and unknowable comes in.

We don't know exactly what life is going to ask of you. Maybe you'll decide to run a race. Maybe you'll spend a day skiing, hiking or biking.
Maybe you'll play hockey.
Maybe you'll help someone move.
Maybe you'll carry a sleeping kid up a flight of stairs, haul bags of soil around the yard or suddenly have to sprint after something.

We can't specifically prepare you for every physical challenge you'll encounter.

So we prepare you for as many of them as we possibly can.

That's CrossFit.

Your fitness also isn't supposed to exist only inside the walls of the gym. The strength, endurance, stamina, power, coordination and confidence you develop here are supposed to leave with you.

The barbell is a tool. The rower is a tool. The pull up rig is a tool. The running, squatting, jumping, carrying, pushing and pulling are all tools.

Fitness is the outcome.

And the real test of that fitness isn't necessarily your Fran time, your back squat or where your name lands on the leaderboard.

It's what your body is capable of doing when life asks something of it.

That's what we're training for.

That's CrossFit.
