Which type of Coachable Athlete are you?
(Let’s take a look at your “listen to the coach” style)
Coaching athletes is one of the best parts of our job. The progress, the breakthroughs, the moments when it all clicks. But let’s be honest, how coachable someone is can take a few, different forms.
So just for fun, let’s see which one sounds most like you (and hey, no shame, we’ve all been one or more of these at some point):
1. The Nodder
You nod, smile, look engaged, but the second we walk away, you go right back to doing it your way.
Catchphrase: “Yeah yeah I know, I know…”
We love you, but: You don’t know. That’s why we’re cueing you.
2. The Over Analyzer
You take every cue as a deep philosophical question about your existence.
Catchphrase: “But what if I externally rotate and push my knees out while thinking about my childhood?”
We love you, but: Sometimes you just need to squat, my friend.
3. The Ghost
You’re in the class, but you somehow vanish the second coaching starts.
Catchphrase: [Crickets]
We love you, but: Where did you go during the whiteboard brief?
4. The Debater
Every cue comes with a rebuttal or a counterpoint.
Catchphrase: “But I read somewhere that you’re not supposed to do that if you’re tight in the anterior chain...”
We love you, but: This isn’t a podcast, just try the cue and see what happens.
5. The Knows Better
You’ve read the blogs, followed the Games athletes, and watched a few mobility reels, so now you know exactly what to do. Even if your movement says otherwise.
Catchphrase: “Well, actually, I heard it’s better to…”
We love you, but: Cool. Now let’s just keep your heels down and start from there.
6. The Mirror
Whatever we demo, you copy exactly, including the accidental mistakes we were hoping you wouldn’t notice.
Catchphrase: “Like this?”
We love you, but: You don’t need to be our reflection. Let’s find your best version of the movement instead.
7. The Sponge
You take it in, apply it right away, and ask thoughtful follow up questions. You’re focused, curious, and make coaching a blast.
Catchphrase: “Got it! What’s next?”
We love you, obviously. Keep doing what you’re doing.
So, which one are you?
Here’s the truth: like we said last week, being coachable doesn’t mean being perfect. It means being open, being willing to try, and being willing to be a little uncomfortable for the sake of getting better.
