9/11 Tribute WOD

Twenty four years ago, on September 11, 2001, the United States was brutally attacked when four planes were hijacked by terrorists. Two planes crashed into the Twin Towers in New York City, a third struck the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and the fourth went down in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The attacks, took nearly 3,000 lives, among the countless live lost were 343 firefighters and 72 police officers who gave their lives in service.

The damage and heartbreak of that day left a lasting impact not only on the United States, but on the world.

Tomorrow, we will pause to remember. To honor the civilians whose lives were taken far too soon, to pay tribute to the police officers and firefighters who ran toward danger to protect others, and to reflect on the way the world was forever changed.

In CrossFit, Hero WODs were created as a way to honor and remember the fallen, through movement. They allow us to feel, to sweat, to struggle, and in our own way, to grieve and pay respect. Each year, we come together at CrossFit Indestri to complete the 9/11 Tribute WOD for exactly that reason.

The numbers in the workout all hold special meaning:

  • 2001m row or run: the year of the attacks.

  • 9 movements × 11 reps each: the date itself, 9/11.

  • 125 lb thruster: representing the number of lives lost at the Pentagon.

  • 175 lb power clean: symbolic of Flight 175 that hit the South Tower.

  • 170 lb deadlift: representing Flight 77 and Flight 93 combined.

  • 110 lb push jerk: the number of floors in each of the Twin Towers.

This workout however is not about scores or times.
It’s about remembering.
It’s about honoring.
It’s about standing united, through movement, through community, and through respect for those we lost.

In honour of that, instead of taking a score on the whiteboard, on 9/11 beside your name we ask for the location you were on 9/11 when you found out about the attacks.

This workout will also start sitting on your rower with 1 minute of still silence.
