Why we coach movement first

You’ve probably noticed we talk about mechanics and standard of movement a lot. Before we ask you to go faster, lift heavier, or push harder, we always focus on how you move. That’s not by accident. It’s at the heart of CrossFit’s methodology, and it’s why our coaching always comes back to the framework of mechanics, consistency, and intensity.

Mechanics = Learn to move well

Mechanics are simply the basics of movement, how you squat, press, pull, hinge, and jump. This is where we start. We want you to understand not just what a movement looks like, but how it should feel when you do it right.

  • Can you hit full range of motion?

  • Are your joints stacked and safe?

  • Does the movement look and feel smooth?

Good mechanics are the foundation for everything else. Without them, you’re building on shaky ground.

Consistency = Prove you can move well over and over again

Once you’ve learned how to move well, the next step is proving you can do it again and again. That’s consistency. It’s not just about showing up regularly to classes, it’s about repeating good movement patterns across reps, sets, and days.

  • Can you squat with good form for 10 reps in a row?

  • Can you maintain that same form when you’re tired?

  • Can you repeat it next week, next month, next year?

Consistency is where we build habits that stick and movement patterns that become second nature.

Intensity = Add the gas pedal

Only after mechanics and consistency are in place do we encourage you to add intensity. Whether that’s loading more weight on the bar, moving faster through a workout, or tackling a more complex skill. Intensity is what drives results, but it’s only safe and effective when the first two pieces are solid.

It’s tempting to skip straight to intensity because that’s where the sweat, the heart rate, and the competition live. But without mechanics and consistency, intensity becomes risky instead of rewarding.

This approach is why you’ll hear our coaches cueing movement standards, asking you to slow down, or suggesting a lighter weight. It’s not because we don’t believe you can push yourself, it’s because we know that building a strong foundation pays off with long term progress, fewer injuries, and better results.

We coach movement first, because when you move well and move well consistently, you earn the right to go harder. And that’s when the magic happens.
