If CrossFit movements had personalities

Spend enough time doing CrossFit and you start to realize that every movement has a personality. Some are reliable. Some are dramatic. Some make you feel incredibly capable, and well some seem to wake up every morning and choose violence.

The Deadlift

Dependable. Straightforward. No games. Pick it up, and put it down. The deadlift doesn't need attention or need to show off. It's just quietly strong and always there when you need it. Until you get a little too confident, and it quickly reminds you who's in charge.

The Thruster

The friend who says, "It'll be fun!" It will not be fun. The thruster somehow takes two perfectly reasonable movements and combines them into something significantly less reasonable. It also has absolutely no respect for your heart rate.

The Burpee

The burpee doesn't care how strong you are, how fit you are, what shoes you're wearing or what your one-rep max is. Get on the floor. Get back up. Repeat. The burpee is an equal opportunity humbler.

Double Unders

Temperamental. One day you've got them. The next day you've apparently never held a skipping rope before in your life. Double unders can also smell frustration, and the angrier you get, the worse they become.

The Back Squat

The responsible one. Shows up, does the work and makes everyone around it better. It's not particularly flashy, but you know your life is probably better with it in it.

The Assault Bike

A liar. "Oh, it's only 10 calories." Sure.

The Box Jump

Confident, energetic and slightly reckless. Everything is going great until you think about it too much. Then suddenly that box you've jumped on hundreds of times looks approximately six feet tall.

The Snatch

High maintenance. Everything needs to be just right. Your timing, position, speed and balance all need to cooperate. You can do 47 things correctly and the snatch will still find the one thing you did wrong. But when everything comes together? It’s beautiful. And it knows it.

The Clean

The snatch's slightly more forgiving sibling. Still technical. Still demanding. But generally willing to work with you. Most of the time.

The Pull Up

Popular. Everybody wants to be friends with the pull up. Getting your first one feels like you've officially joined some sort of secret club. Then CrossFit introduces chest to bar and suddenly your regular pull up isn't cool enough anymore.

The Toes to Bar

Seems reasonable in theory. Your toes are right there. The bar is right there. Just put the two together. Easy, right? Apparently not.

The Wall Ball

The coworker who schedules a meeting that absolutely could have been an email. Again. And again. And again.

The Rower

Fair. You work, it works. You slow down, it knows. You try to fake it, it knows. The rower simply gives you exactly what you give it, which is both admirable and incredibly annoying.

The Handstand

The fun friend. It makes you feel like a kid again, until you realize being upside down as an adult is considerably more complicated than you remember.

The Handstand Push Up

The handstand got a promotion and immediately became difficult to work with.

The Rope Climb

Adventurous and a little intimidating. It makes absolutely no sense when you first learn it. Then one day your feet finally figure out what they're supposed to be doing and suddenly you feel unstoppable.

Running

The one who somehow keeps getting invited even though half the group keeps asking who invited them. And yes, running is CrossFit.

The Echo Bike

We already discussed the Assault Bike. This is its meaner cousin.

The Bar Facing Burpee

The burpee looked at its already terrible personality and thought, "You know what I'm missing? A barbell."

The Turkish Get Up

Has a 14-step morning routine. Very particular. Would like you to slow down, pay attention and stop rushing everything. Honestly, it probably gives pretty good advice.

The Sled Push

Doesn't talk much. Just puts its head down and works. You respect it. Your legs don't.

The Muscle Up

The cool kid. Everyone wants one. And the second you finally get your first, you immediately start wondering when you can get two. Because apparently we're never satisfied.

That's CrossFit. A whole room full of movements with wildly different personalities. Some we love, some we tolerate, and some we actively avoid making eye contact with when they're written on the whiteboard.

But somehow, we keep coming back to all of them.

Except maybe the Echo Bike. We're still deciding about that one.
