Taking care of our equipment

Happy Monday everyone. Just a little equipment PSA to start the week, and a couple of friendly reminders about our Concept2 BikeErgs and SkiErgs.

Last Thursday, I replaced the handlebar post mechanisms on two of our BikeErgs. Unfortunately, between the cost of the parts and the lovely tariffs to get them across the border, the total came to over $500.

Of course, as a business, we understand that equipment maintenance, repairs and replacements are all part of the cost of doing business. We have a lot of equipment that gets a lot of use, and keeping everything in good working order is a cost. But sometimes a little reminder about how to use and adjust equipment can go a long way in helping prevent unnecessary repairs.

First up, the BikeErgs.

When adjusting the handlebars, the knob only needs a slight turn to securely lock everything into place. There's no need to tighten it as much as possible. A gentle turn is all it takes, and it helps protect the adjustment mechanism. Please do not over turn this, that is the reason for the two that have just been replaced.

Next up, the SkiErgs.

We've also been experiencing an unusual number of issues lately with the SkiErg handle cables jumping off their spools.

We've had SkiErgs in our facility for over 11 years, and it's not something we've typically had to deal with until very recently. In doing a little digging, and in speaking with concept2, there’s a good chance that it’s happening because the handles are released too low, or because the cables are being pulled all the way to the bottom of their range.

So, just a couple of things to be mindful of when you're skiing.

When you're finished, please bring the handles all the way back up to the highest point on the SkiErg before letting go. And during your pulls, try not to pull so low that you're completely maxing out the cables at the bottom. “tapping out the cables”

The sweet spot is to ski in the middle. You can still generate plenty of power and intensity without pulling the cables to their absolute limit.

Let’s be clear, that none of this is about pointing fingers. Equipment gets used, things happen, and sometimes we don't realize that a small adjustment in how we're using something can make a difference.

We love that our equipment gets put to good use every single day. That's exactly what it's there for. And with so many people using it throughout the week, those little things really do add up.

This is just a friendly reminder. And the blog is the easiest way to share with our entire community, rather then coaches having to remind every class.

Thank you for taking care of the equipment
