CrossFit vs. Hyrox isn’t a thing
Lately, there’s been even more chatter online about CrossFit vs. Hyrox.
Why doesn’t CrossFit sponsor Hyrox?
Why doesn’t CrossFit talk about Hyrox?
Is Hyrox the future? Is CrossFit falling behind?
Here’s the simple answer.
CrossFit and Hyrox are not the same thing.
And they are not in competition with each other.
They live in completely different categories.
CrossFit is a training methodology.
A methodology that didn’t just add another option to the fitness industry, but fundamentally changed it. CrossFit defined fitness, standardized it, and built a system around developing broad, general, inclusive fitness for life.
It’s how you train.
Day in, day out.
Across years and decades.
Hyrox, on the other hand, is a fitness race.
A well run, global, weekend event where people test themselves in a standardized race format. Much like Tough Mudder and Spartan are obstacle and mud runs, Hyrox is a fitness race that happens in arenas around the world.
It’s not a methodology.
It’s not a training system.
It’s not something you “do” year round.
It’s something you train for.
That distinction matters.
Calling it “CrossFit vs. Hyrox” is like comparing apples and oranges. Or maybe more accurately, comparing training to race day.
They don’t serve the same purpose.
So why all the noise?
Because people love to frame things as competition when they don’t need to be, and because it’s easier to argue online than to understand context.
Here’s the irony.
What is the best way to train for a Hyrox race?
There’s no question. CrossFit.
CrossFit prepares people to run, lift, push, pull, squat, hinge, and cycle through movements under fatigue. It develops work capacity across broad time and modal domains. It teaches people how to move efficiently, recover quickly, and keep going when things get uncomfortable.
We literally invented the wall ball shot.
Yes, Hyrox involves more running than most people do in their regular CrossFit classes, so if you’re signing up, you should absolutely put some kilometers on your feet. But that’s an addition, not a replacement.
There is no better base for Hyrox than CrossFit.
That’s why so many CrossFit athletes perform so well when they enter Hyrox events. Not because Hyrox is CrossFit, but because CrossFit builds the exact capacity Hyrox demands.
So do we, as a CrossFit affiliate, “hate” Hyrox? Of course not.
Hyrox is fun.
It’s challenging.
It gives people a goal and a reason to train.
That’s a good thing.
Do we like being compared to Hyrox? Also no.
Because CrossFit isn’t a race.
It isn’t a weekend event.
And it isn’t something you outgrow or replace.
CrossFit is the training you do so that you can show up ready for whatever you choose to take on. Whether that’s a Hyrox race, a Spartan, a charity run, a pickup hockey game, or simply life outside the gym.
So if you’re hearing a lot of CrossFit vs. Hyrox talk lately, understand what it really is.
Noise.
CrossFit is the training.
Hyrox is the race.
One doesn’t threaten the other.
And one doesn’t replace the other.
They just aren’t the same thing at all.
