Learning new skills
Last Thursday, as I was inputting blogs, I sat back for a moment and just watched the 9:30am class.
Across the floor were people of different ages, different abilities, different training backgrounds, and all were working on the same thing: handstand walking, (as was the case in all the classes). Some were taking their very first steps upside down, some were linking longer sections, and some were laughing their way through the awkward in between moments. But every single person was fully in it.
What struck me most wasn’t the skill itself, but it was the pure joy on your faces.
There was cheering.
There was laughter.
There was frustration followed by breakthroughs.
There was the kind of excitement that only comes from trying something hard, something unfamiliar, and realizing you might actually be able to do it.
There are a lot of things that make CrossFit uniquely CrossFit.
The coaching.
The community.
The shared effort.
But one of the most special parts of training here is the number of new skills you learn along the way.
Not just strength.
Not just fitness.
Skills.
Skills that challenge coordination, balance, confidence, and trust in your body. Skills that, in many cases, serve you well outside these walls. Being comfortable upside down builds shoulder strength and stability, it teaches body awareness, and it demands patience and persistence. But maybe most importantly, it reminds you that learning doesn’t stop just because you’re an adult.
Of course, some skills are simply fun party tricks, and that’s okay too.
But here’s the thing: you never really know when a skill might come in handy. Maybe not literally walking on your hands down the street, but the confidence that comes from knowing you can learn knew things and do hard things? That carries over everywhere.
Watching that class last Thursday was a reminder of why this place matters so much. It wasn’t about who went the farthest or who made it look the best. It was about showing up, trying something new, supporting each other, and enjoying the process.
And honestly, it was pretty incredible to watch.
