A misconception
One of the biggest misconceptions we see online is that all CrossFitters somehow hate HYROX.
That couldn't be further from the truth.
In fact, if you've signed up to compete in a HYROX race this October, we think that's fantastic. Having a goal to train for is a great way to stay motivated, challenge yourself, and see what you're capable of.
The misconception comes from people misunderstanding what CrossFit and HYROX actually are.
CrossFit is a training methodology.
HYROX is a fitness race.
Those are two very different things.
Registering for HYROX is no different than registering for a Tough Mudder, a Spartan Race, the VO2 Sports 10K, a marathon, or any other fitness event. It's a competition you sign up for, train for, and hopefully enjoy on race day.
CrossFit, on the other hand, is the methodology that prepares you for those events, while also preparing you for life outside the gym.
One of CrossFit's foundational principles is that our needs differ by degree, not kind. The same training that helps someone carry groceries, hike a mountain, play recreational hockey, or keep up with their kids is the same training that can prepare someone for a HYROX race, a Spartan race, the CrossFit Open, a local 5km or 10km run, etc.
If you're competing in any fitness related events, you're already doing most of the training you need right here. Sure if you’re event involves a run, you might have to put a few more km’s on your feet, or if it involves a swim, you’ll have to get in the water, or a bike, you’ll have to get out on the road on a bike. But for the most part, you’re training in here, prepares you for anything outside of here.
For those of you who have signed up for the HYROX race this October in Toronto, that’s awesome. It’s a great goal to have, and throughout the year you have been training to get ready, we program skiing, rowing, sled pushes and pulls, wall balls, walking lunges, farmer carries, burpees, broad jumps, and countless all the time. They're movements that have always been part of our programming in different formats.
The biggest difference for you will be the running volume.
The race includes eight 1 km runs spread throughout the event. While we certainly run lots, especially at this time of the year, if you're racing this October, we'd highly recommend that you’re joining us for the final three trackNITEs of the season.
Each trackNITE covers approximately 4 to 6+ kilometres through a structured running session, making it an excellent complement to your regular training inside the facility. It's a great opportunity to build your confidence, improve your pacing, and prepare for the demands of race day.
That's one of the things we love most about CrossFit.
It doesn't prepare you for just one thing, iIt prepares you for almost anything.
Whether your goal is the upcoming HYROX race, a Spartan, the V02 sports 10K, a hockey season, hiking, skiing, or simply feeling healthier and more capable every day, the training you do inside our affiliate builds the broad, general, and inclusive fitness to help you succeed.
So no all the build up you see online of CrossFit and HYROX does not mean that every CrossFitter hates HYROX. That’s just not the case. The comparison lacks understanding of the difference between the two.
So for those of you that are signed up to race this October, we'll be cheering you on. But also we expect to see you at the last 3 trackNITE sessions putting some extra km’s into your training.
